Old Dominion EMS Alliance will host an EMS Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator (PECC) Workshop on September 1, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM in Henrico.
A Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator—sometimes called a pediatric champion—helps an EMS agency strengthen pediatric preparedness and ensure that pediatric considerations remain part of training, quality improvement, policies, protocols, equipment, and day-to-day operations. The EMSC Innovation and Improvement Center identifies having a PECC as a key element of pediatric readiness for EMS agencies.
This workshop is designed to help agencies understand the PECC role and provide practical guidance for building and maintaining a strong pediatric program within their organization.

What Is an EMS PECC?
An EMS PECC serves as an agency-level resource and advocate for pediatric emergency care.
According to the EMSC Innovation and Improvement Center, PECC responsibilities may include helping colleagues become familiar with pediatric-specific policies and protocols, promoting pediatric quality improvement efforts, and helping manage pediatric equipment and supplies.
The role does not have to be a full-time or standalone position. In an EMS agency, one PECC is generally recommended, and the PECC role can be incorporated into an individual’s existing responsibilities. A person also does not necessarily need an extensive pediatric specialty background before taking on the role.

The workshop will provide practical information agencies can use to establish or strengthen their pediatric emergency care program, including:
- How to set up and maintain an agency PECC program
- Understanding the responsibilities of the EMS PECC position
- Planning, coordinating, and validating pediatric education and training
- Using pediatric ePCR data for performance improvement
- Additional strategies and resources to support pediatric readiness within your agency
Why Does Having a PECC Matter?
Pediatric emergencies can present unique clinical, communication, equipment, and operational challenges for EMS providers.
A designated PECC helps keep pediatric readiness from becoming something an agency only focuses on immediately before a pediatric training or after a difficult call. Instead, the PECC can help integrate pediatric considerations into ongoing education, quality improvement, equipment readiness, policies, and agency planning.
National organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Emergency Physicians, American College of Surgeons, Emergency Nurses Association, Emergency Medical Services for Children Program, National Association of State EMS Officials, and National EMS Advisory Council recommend the PECC concept as part of pediatric readiness.

Agencies that do not currently have a PECC are especially encouraged to consider identifying someone who can attend and begin developing the role.
