Old Dominion EMS Alliance will host a two-day Casualty Simulation (Moulage) Course on September 29–30, 2026, taught by Bob Ryalls.
This hands-on course is designed for EMS educators, instructors, simulation personnel, and others involved in scenario-based training who want to create more realistic and effective training environments.
What makes this course especially unique is the opportunity to immediately put those skills into practice. Day 1 will focus on instruction and hands-on moulage techniques. On Day 2, participants will apply moulage to live simulated victims participating in a regional mass-casualty incident (MCI) exercise.
About the Course
Effective casualty simulation involves much more than simply applying makeup. Bob Ryalls’ casualty simulation material emphasizes four key components of a realistic training environment: planning, moulage, staging, and symptomatic acting.
During the instructional portion of the course, participants will explore techniques and considerations for creating realistic simulated casualties, including:
- Safe use and application of moulage materials
- Infection control, allergies, and participant safety
- Planning and staging realistic casualty scenarios
- Blending, feathering, and highlighting techniques
- Creating simulated bruises, lacerations, burns, wounds, fractures, and other injuries
- Incorporating props and environmental details
- Using symptomatic acting to increase scenario realism
- Hands-on practice creating simulated injuries
Two Days: Learn It, Then Put It Into Practice
Day 1 – Instruction and Hands-On Training
September 29, 2026
Participants will receive classroom and hands-on instruction from Bob Ryalls covering casualty simulation techniques, materials, safety considerations, staging, and methods for creating realistic simulated injuries.
Day 2 – Regional MCI Exercise
September 30, 2026
Participants will take what they learned on Day 1 and apply it in a real-world training environment by providing moulage for live simulated victims participating in a regional MCI exercise.
This gives attendees an opportunity to move beyond classroom practice and experience the process of preparing multiple victims for a large-scale emergency exercise.
Who Should Attend?
This course is intended for individuals involved in:
- EMS education and instruction
- Simulation and scenario development
- Mass-casualty and disaster exercises
- Agency training programs
- Emergency preparedness
- Other roles where realistic casualty simulation can improve training
EMS educators and instructors looking to improve the realism of classroom scenarios, certification programs, MCI exercises, and other hands-on training activities are especially encouraged to attend.
Why Moulage Matters
Realistic simulation can transform a training scenario from simply practicing a skill into an immersive learning experience.
When injuries, patient presentation, staging, and scenario details work together, responders must interpret what they see, prioritize patients, communicate, make clinical decisions, and perform skills in an environment that more closely resembles an actual emergency.
The opportunity to apply moulage during a regional MCI exercise also allows participants to see firsthand how casualty simulation contributes to the overall realism and effectiveness of a large-scale exercise.
